[edit] The Story
I read Savage Inequalities in 11th grade, on the recommendation of my social studies teacher, Mr. Milligan. The following summer, I read Lives on the Boundary for Dr. Benton's class. These two books together awakened my calling to be a teacher. I declared my major as English Education upon arriving at NYU in 1997, and worked in various schools and Head Starts throughout my undergraduate years. Upon graduating in 2001, I was hired as an English teacher at Gompers High School and I've been there ever since!
[edit] What I Teach
At Gompers, I teach 9th grade English, one section of Ramp-Up and three sections of E1 (Freshman English). My students are mostly male and Spanish. Male students, in the context of a traditional English class, present a unique challenge, one with which I've struggled since I began teaching. My practice has been slowly evolving from putting together whatever lessons look good at the moment, with no real cohesive theme from September to June, to a more reflective pratice in which I try to return to the same themes, again and again, through a variety of texts and writing assignments, in the vein of Understanding by Design.

== My Motto ==
Se Hace Camino Al Andar (I like it so much I had it tattooed on my ankle!)
== Who am I? Where am I from? ==
I'm a white Jewish girl from the 'burbs but everyone thinks I'm Puerto Rican or else they can't figure it out. I'm a huge nerd, both bookwise and techwise but I'm thisshort of being a total geek.
== People I enjoy working with ==
I work best with people that: 1. have a good sense of humor 2. are laid-back 3. have a thing or two to say about the world 4. have the ability to keep things in perspective 5. have a keen interest and curiousity in something
== Interests ==
I read, bike, hike, travel, blog, go flaneur-ing, I'm all over the place!
== Books ==
I keep a list of books I've read and am currently reading in two places: here and here.
== My Life with the NYC Department of Education==
I've been with the DOE since 2001, at the same school for 4 and half years. I've been teaching 9th graders this whole time and now, I'm looking for a different mode, so I'm applying for a job as a literacy coach (yes, my AP knows!). Otherwise, next year, I've been promised only one 9th grade section and the others will be 11th or 12th.
