[edit] My Motto
Leave the place better than you found it.
[edit] Brief History
I want for there to be moments in my classroom when students feel that they know what is expected from them, sense that those around them are interested in what they are doing, see that there are a variety of possibilities to choose from, and feel comfortable enough to become unselfconsciously involved in whatever they are interested in. My goal is to provision so as to allow for such moments to happen.
Provisioning for loved work to take hold in the classroom and for the person to come forward leads me to value making and doing, and adolescents’ own standards for what they do and make.
My mother was an artist and my father was a scientist. Each of them struggled to find ways to do work they valued. At Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio in the early 1980's, my professors welcomed me into a community of thinkers. I got to learn alongside them. In the years after I graduated, I worked first with Lakota Sioux community organizers on five reservations in South Dakota, and then with community organizers in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Chicago, and western Massachusetts. In 1991, I went to get an MA in teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. I have been teaching ever since in the New York City Public Schools: at University Heights High School in the Bronx until 1997, and here at East Side Community High School in the Lower East Side of Manhattan from 1997 to the present.
