So, during the 1870s and 1880s the supreme court failed to overturn the poll tax or the grandfather clause even though the laws undermined all federal protections for the Africans Americans civil rights. Blacks law voting rights southern states passed racial segregation laws to seperate whites and blacks people in public and private facilities (Antoinette - please rewrite this sentence so its clearer and then delete my comments here. The racial rules were put into efffect in schools, hospital, parks, and transportation system through out the south. Marriages and religion were both segregated by race. Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP were among the few who chipped away at the jim crow laws to stop segregation.
