New York City Writing Project/Adult Learning Center Bibliography in Process A Selection of Resources for Older Beginning Readers and Their Teachers
[edit] Introduction
A group of educators of the Institute for Literacy Studies at Lehman College came together to share experiences around helping older beginning readers. Although teacher-consultants who work in junior high and high schools from the New York City Writing Project (NYCWP) and adult educators from the Adult Learning Center (ALC) work within the same agency and with similar issues, there has been little opportunity for our two groups to talk. Through conversations with each project, the executive director found folks voicing the same concerns: How do we help junior and high school students or adults become competent readers who use their literacy skills for enjoyment and continued learning? The struggles appeared to have common themes, and similar questions were raised for both populations.
