"most of the island's income from exports was derived from sugar and its products. This meant that the jibaro/jibara's (poor country folk) rice (from Louisiana and Texas), his/her bacalao (codfish, from Newfoundland) and his/her machetes (from Hartford, Connecticut) were brought with sugar money" -R. Hancock, 1960
